Prelude
Vengeance. The word itself has a hard edge to it, like sliding a knife between someones ribs. Once you commit that first act on the path of vengeance you have to follow it through to the end. He knew that. He that someone was going to end up dead. He had managed to convince himself that he wasn't responsible as he wasn't going to pull the trigger, but if you set someone up for a fall then your hands still have blood on them. What had he sacrificed for vengeance? Pride is always the first to go. Then respect for yourself and then for others. Everything, everyone around you becomes a tool for vengeance. She became a tool. He used her. She did her job. Now she was dead. Once you start on the path, vengeance is all that matters.

Success. It was a good feeling. A kind of fuzzy warmth you get when you see a 40 yard pass and a touchdown. People look at you with respect. Then the other shoe drops. He had a new desk, a new job title, a fat new cred slip, and now he had to step over a line he had drawn in his life. He had to place a friend in danger. Not just a friend. She'd done time, she knew the town, she knew the people, but he knew that if he pushed her too far she may cross that line and become a mirror image of what she was now. He drew in a deep breath trying to wash away the dirty feeling he had. Then he called Eclipse...

The look in their eyes, the look that once held fear, now holds contempt. What's the first thing you loose in failure? Your pride. Having to ask for something your would have just taken. Having to depend on other people when you needed no one before. Now he had to ask, not demand, but ask for help. He knew the hunt was on. Failure was a word his organisation, his former organisation, didn't accept. Failures just tended to disappear one day never to be heard of again. He needed protection, he needed help, he needed family. He took a deep breath trying to wash away the burning sensation he had in his throat. Then he called Sammy Lee...

Ambivalence. A sense of nothing. An emptiness, a hollow in you chest. It was like being in freefall, waiting to hit the ground but it never came. He wished he could feel something. He knew he should feel pain, he knew he should feel loss, but he felt nothing. She was dead. He'd put he in danger and she was gone. He remembered the first time they'd met, he could remember the feeling, but he just couldn't feel it. She'd wanted to help. She came up with the plan. He should have stopped her there, before it went any further. He knew it was wrong but he didn't feel a thing. Now she was dead, crushed in a twisted metal cage, and he knew, just knew, that it wasn't an accident. He picked up the envelope. He was ready. Ready for vengeance, the only feeling he had left...
