Background
Picture a street gang. A small close-knit group who sometimes have their arguments with each other, but in the end know that they can rely on one another, because each other is all they have. Family - no, closer than family, watching over one another. Just a few streets marked out as their own - not particularly intestersting streets - but they protect them with their lives - 'owning' those streets is the only thing keeping them alive. Part of the 'food chain' preying on the small shops, bothering them for protection money, and in turn paying most of that up to the 'bigger fish' of the local Yakuza.
Only a small gang - but reknown for being more trouble than it's worth to try and knock over. They might lose the odd member once in a blue moon to rival gangs, but they get their revenge - and leave any who try to cross them with a healthy respect.
But sometimes it isn't enough, being dangerous and respected will keep you out of most fights, but not all. The Shedim don't care about territory, they don't care who 'owns' a street. They say you have to adapt to survive - a strength one day, becomes a weakness the next. Refusal to surrender territory always worked for them in the past, willing to die for the streets you live in soon puts off would be interlopers once they start losing people too - they back off fast. Not the Shedim - they keep coming.
Picture a street gang. Picture the slow advance of the Shedim. They drop in twos and threes.. some of them get back up, more drop - but not fast enough. Picture a ganger being torn apart - his friends fighting their way to him, trying to help him, slowly getting over run - until they too are torn apart. Picture a street gang falling one by one - until the realisation finally catches up with the last standing. Run, or fight. Escape, kill, or die. Even now the old lessons cling too closely - staying to fight - only to see their fallen comrades unsteadily getting to their feet - and coming for them. Can not run. Must fight. But how can you fight your own friend? Take arms against those wearing the faces of your friends, or run? An easier decision.. run - and try to put out of your mind the shredded shambling bodies of friends trying to kill you.
